When most of us think about replacing our air conditioners, we’re considering how best to keep cool, especially during the hot summer months.
There is, however, another consideration. Air conditioning units do more than just moderate indoor temperature levels. They also have a large impact on overall air quality.
Residents of Southern California especially should take note.
Air Quality Concerns
During the spring of 2020, several California cities topped air pollution charts.
Los Angeles remains the city with the worst ozone pollution in the nation, as it has been for 20 years of the 21-year history of the report. Bakersfield, California, reclaimed its position as the most-polluted community for year-round particle pollution, while Fresno-Madera-Hanford has the worst short-term particle pollution.
This is of great concern.
Even short-term exposure to polluted air can have side effects, including immediate cardiovascular and respiratory symptoms. Long-term exposure produces even more serious issues. Lungs age more quickly, losing capacity and function. Odds for developing chronic conditions such as asthma and emphysema increase. Even without an acute diagnosis, prolonged exposure to low air quality can lead to a decrease in quality (and possibly length) of life.
With a strong indoor air quality system in place, however, you can set aside some of these concerns.
